Practices

As of 2017, we are certified by A Greener World Animal Welfare Approved: Beef, Pork, and Lamb. Certified 100% lifelong Grass-fed Beef, and Lamb. We will never use hormones, fungicides, pesticides, or herbicides. Dewormers and anti-parasite medications are only used as vet prescribed. We breed to manage for parasite resistance, no regular deworming, as those little buggers are becoming resistant.

How we farm

As of 2014, our cattle and sheep have qualified for organic certification. Our chickens, ducks, and pigs did not qualify for organic certification in 2018-2019. We are not organic certified but we follow closely to the regulations set forth. Our goal is to never use antibiotics and raise our animals to reduce their need - like breeding with the seasons and being nursed by the mothers, not bottle-fed. We have only needed to use antibiotics once in 5 years for three of our pigs. Since then, we have changed the husbandry and have never needed them again. We keep open records and would openly list an individual animal if it had antibiotics ever in its life, not just the withdrawal time. We are required by Animal Welfare Approved to provide vet care and antibiotics ONLY if an animal needs it to save its life - it is not allowed to suffer.

We have years of herbal and alternative health knowledge that we use to naturally support our animals to be vibrant and healthy. From 2014-2018, we purchased all of our organic chicken, bird and pig feed from Chastons Organic Feed Mill in Chaston, WI.

In late 2018, we got permission from our current customers to not use organic feed temporarily so we could make pasture improvements on the farm that would give the cattle and pigs better grazing.

We grow almost all our hay, and our organic uncle and neighbors supply the rest. We have training from the Green Bay Technical College Sustainable Agriculture Program for organic certification.

Grass & pasture based rotational Grazing

Perennial Grass Rotational Grazing is key for slowing climate change, building soil vitality for generations to come, environment protection, and wildlife inclusion. We know the deep nutritional values gained from a natural grass-based food system, and how it can greatly affect human health. We rotationally graze all the cattle, and the growing pigs graze where they will in the cattle lands. Sheep have special mineral needs, so they have pastures separate from the cattle. During the growing season, chickens and ducks are moved over the pasture in mobile houses, gathering nutrition from “live food” and completing the ecosystem by fertilizing the pastures.

Our pasture and foods include herbs and native plants for vibrant health in our animals. The cows and sheep never receive corn or soy. Our pigs are a special slow-growing grazing breed. The growing pigs are on pasture and fed less than 1% sunflowers, peas, or oats a day. There is no need for corn or soy when there is grass to graze. We only butcher in the fall. Winter food is based on fermented alfalfa “haylage” and vegetables like pumpkins, squash, and apples. At this time, we supplement with a corn and soy blend as we are in the process of acquiring a large number of peas, barley, rye, and oats needed to get through the winter.

Nature Conservation & food for the soul

We are blending our love of nature conservation with our farm by planting large strips of native plants to support bees, butterflies, birds, and more. We set aside land specifically for wild spaces with rich, diverse borders and fence lines. We’ve also added bird and bat houses to the property. These plantings provide us with wild-crafted medical herbs for our animals and other business, Green Heart Natural Health. We encourage you to join us for our community enrichment and learning days in both farming and alternative health and wellness.

At the heart of it all, we strive for a holistic balance. We consider the needs of the earth, animals, and the human body, mind, and soul. There is a joy and deep peace that flavors all we touch. A flavor that hangs just at the edge of understanding yet is so undeniably real. Come and let us feed you. Connect with us and become part of a community, bringing kindness and true wellness to our world. One family, one moment, one meal at a time.
